You have booked your maternity photoshoot or newborn photoshoot (or even both…) and wondering what clothes you should be wearing, so I’ve put together some suggestions which I hope will help you.

For my clients who have a photoshoot booked with me, don’t forget your session with me includes style advice - I am happy to chat to you about what you are wearing and see any outfits before hand.

The last thing anyone wants to think about after giving birth to their new baby, is dressing up for a photoshoot and let’s face it, childbirth is hard work and I doubt most women are feeling their best after childbirth. Equally we don’t want to look back on our photos and think we look awful.

Here are my suggestions on for you and brings you joy. Most of all, remember - your body just made a baby - you are amazing!

1. Comfortable - wear clothes which make you feel comfortable. Being a Hampshire on location photographer, means that I get to come to your home and other new Hampshire Mums, and photography you there. You don’t need to dress up to get out to a photography studio for a particular time.

2. Neutrals & Muted Colours / light patterns / no logos - Newborn babies are so fragile, so new - I don’t want them to be drowned out in their photo by colour and pattern, but to be surrounded by an atmosphere as gentle as they. They are definitely going to be focal point of their photographs.
If there are other people than just Mum and Baby in the photoshoot, the other members could also wear clothes which compliment each other but not identical

3. Black Sweater. Some of the lifestyle photographs I take look best against a black background, so if Dad can a black sweater available that would be really helpful.

4. Flattering Shape. After giving birth, it takes a few days for the uterus to shrink back down. For some Mother’s this is fine and they are proud, I know for myself - it was a hard accepting this change to my body shape (won’t even talk about the effects of water retention) and I preferred to have a few photos where I was not noticing my tummy so much. Non clingy outfits will help you feel relaxed, resses can be really good options, and so can vintage nightgowns.

What Should Your Newborn Wear To Your Hampshire Maternity Photoshoot?

As above, keep it simple with the neutral and muted colours and also the light or no patterns, so as not to distract from your newborn son or newborn daughter’s beautiful features.

Size: Do check the outfit you want them to wear fits well, shops seem to have their own ideas with sizing and we need the outfit to be well fitting, esp around the feet.

Blankets: Have some handy, again - no strong patterns, but look different textures can add something special the photo. I’ll bring some wraps with me, but using your own blankets add something special when they are older and can see themselves in a blanket they still have and love.
